Corazon

A few hours from now, August 5, 2009, former Philippine President Corazon “Cory” Aquino will be laid to rest. She lost her battle against cancer last Saturday.

Maria Corazon "Cory" Sumulong Cojuangco Aquino (January 25, 1933 – August 1, 2009) was the 11th President of the Philippines, serving from 1986 to 1992. She was the first female president of the Philippines and was Asia's first female president. More here.

I may not have followed her political career religiously but I can say that she is one of the most loved Presidents my country ever had. Recently, the outpouring support to the Aquino family as shown on media brings back memories to times of former senator and her husband Ninoy Aquino’s assassination and burial and EDSA 1 People Power revolution, the very moment where she became an icon of democracy. It was yellow all over then. It is a yellow Philippines once again.

Yes, yellow is Corazon Aquino’s color.

chased by grave spotlight
survived a mud-caked kingdom
unfading yellow

President Cory, thank you for being a mother to the Filipinos especially when we needed one during those hard times. Rest in peace now, Ninoy’s arms are patiently waiting for your arrival.
